From the bold shoulder pads and acid wash denim chokehold of the 1980s to the combat boots and cold shoulder tops of the 2010s, one thing that has not changed is expressing personality and emotion through clothing. According to Fashion history timeline.com, the earliest fashion trend in America was the adoption of the 17th century European style.
While there are always trendy items, not everyone is compatible with the same trends. For example, “popular” cliques enjoy Lululemon pieces and Nike. On the other hand, “grunge” crowds prefer thrifting for older finds or “Converse” as their trends.
“I feel that the 2000s style fits me best,” freshman Levi Smith said, “and I relate to it because the baggy jeans and accessories I wear are very laid back.”
Freshman Lyla Brown’s preferences are more contemporary. “I relate to the current decade’s fashion,” she said, “because I love the recent trends like low-rise jeans and the cardigans that everyone is reflecting in their style.”
According to Medium.com, fashion trends are always changing according to the mix of cultural shifts, social media influence, and the human desire for novelty, and are influenced by economic factors, as well.
“I am actually influenced by my personal style,” Smith said. “I truly like the outfits I put together.”
As for myself, I love all different styles starting from the ’70s to now. I love purchasing different pieces like statement shirts and funky accessories so I can expand my horizons, and, honestly, I am always switching up my style because it makes finding the perfect outfit that much more fun.
When asked who or what inspires her style, Brown said, “I mainly look at TikTok or just my peers for my style inspiration.”
As you know, trends always come back in style. According to Missouri State University’s Sartorial Magazine, trends come back about every 20 years, driven by nostalgia and the reinterpretation of style.
