DISCLAIMER

The opinions expressed within this student newspaper do not necessarily represent opinions of the administration, faculty, staff, Greenbrier County Board of Education, or even a consensus of the larger student body. Current journalism law, specifically the federal interpretation of the Hazelwood case, deems that school newspapers may  be considered as school-sponsored activities and may consider principals as publishers acting on behalf of students within their respective school districts, while the Supreme Court has more recently sought guidance from the Student Press Law Model Guidelines for High School Student Media. In turn, this student newspaper aims to maturely handle content deemed controversial yet relevant to student readership. This student newspaper also aims to operate under, and uphold, the legally defined spectrum of First Amendment interpretations regarding the extent of students’ free-speech rights. By long-standing practice, this newspaper has never had prior restraint and thereby meets the “public forum for student expression” test and operates with student editorial independence. Regarding public criticism, the student journalists ask that its readership take into account this newspaper’s motto: Of the students By the students, For the East community. The student journalists aim to always practice sound journalism ethics, to promote the free exchange of ideas, and to embody the spirit of individual growth and learning.
