On March 5-7 the Greenbrier East wrestling team went to the WVSSAC state championship, which is held at the Marshall Health Network Arena.
Sophomore Sonny Herbert, who wrestles in the 120 pound weight class, said the wrestling team spent months preparing through practices, conditioning, and competing in matches throughout the season. “I ended the year with a record of 48 high school wins and 13 losses, not counting open meets,” Herbert said. “I got 3rd at regional and got another opportunity to go to states.”
Unfortunately, Sonny didn’t make the weight to perform at states, and said that although he was still “stuck on the fact I didn’t get first,” he was happy overall with his season.
Sophomore Makaylee Bennett is also a member of the team. “I feel amazing,” Bennett said of her trip to states, crediting her friends and teammates for making it possible. “Not a lot of people are able to go, and the fact I was able to go means a lot. Without my mom or coaches in my corner I wouldn’t have been able to make it.”
Bennett wrestled 185 this year and was thrilled to win first place at regionals and 5th in states.
Great job, Spartan wrestlers!
