The Lady Spartan basketball season is in full swing. Greenbrier East remains ranked number 1 in AAA, and this team, with several successful seasons in years past, has continued their victorious run.
There are many players that contribute to this team’s huge success. This is how a few of them feel about the current season.
Makya White, freshman #20, plays post.
“Our games have went well, but we have some things to improve on,” White says.
Maddie Baker, sophomore #21, plays guard.
“Our first games were against John Marshall and Nitro, and we won,” Baker said. “That brings us to number 1 in AAA.”
John Marshall High School is a class AAA school, so they could be potential competition for the state title. The Lady Spartans played John Marshall at home, on December 6th, and won 74-70.
Nitro High School is also in class AAA, and they have become a large rival for the Lady Spartan basketball team. In their game at Nitro, on December 12th, they took the victory with a final score of 84-72.
Lastly, Kennedy Stewart, senior, wears number 2. She has been a vital force in the Lady Spartan’s victorious past seasons.
“We have done pretty well each game,” Stewart said. “My goal is to make it to states again.”
Recently, the Lady Spartans obtained a huge accomplishment by winning the Battle for the Springhouse tournament at The Greenbrier. They took down Riverside and fought against Morgantown, an AAAA school, for the win.
The Lady Spartan season is shaping up to be a good one. As of now, they remain undefeated (16-0). Each game shows a clear advantage on the Lady Spartan’s end. Although they are ranked #1 in AAA, they are ranked #2 overall, just barely trailing behind George Washington High School, who is also undefeated (16-0).
