For children around the country, their main idea of Christmas is receiving presents under the tree and visiting Santa at the mall. Although it is a nostalgic memory for all during the Christmas season, many other definitions of Christmas go unnoticed around the world. This may be caused by people focusing more on themselves and becoming ungrateful towards tradition and meaning.
The real meaning of Christmas goes much further than just carols and sipping eggnog. The cultural route is seen as a time for family, friends, and giving. The religious route celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is a time to reflect on forgiveness.
One of sophomore Josiah Dehaven’s favorite Christmas memories is his experience aboard a replica of the Polar Express. “They served hot cocoa, sang different songs from the film, and it was an overall great experience,” he said.
“I think the true meaning of Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and spending time with my family,” sophomore Rylee Wickline said when asked what she thinks the true meaning of Christmas is.
For me, Christmas is about gift-giving and spending time with my family and friends. It is nice to hear everyone’s opinions on Christmas because it offers different perspectives. Who knows, maybe you could even collect some of their traditions or start an interesting conversation mixing views on the topic.
