Kristen Rose’s students now have a class pet! Rose’s special education students had long shown interest in wanting a pet for their classroom, so she wanted to make it happen. She filled out an adoption form at the zoology science center in Hurricane, which donated both the animal and the entire set up for the classroom. The animal donated was a bearded dragon named Karen.
“She has been nothing but a short blessing for our classroom,” Rose said. “Her body has 5 different textures that provide a sensory option for the students.”
Each student was asked what their favorite part was about having Karen in the classroom. Mateo, a freshman, said, “Karen makes me so happy and I love to feed her.” Mateo builds Lego obstacle courses and Karen goes through them and plays with them.
Caleb was originally scared to hold Karen, but after spending time with her he said, “Karen makes class fun because she participates in our lessons.”
Junior Kendra says she likes having Karen in class because she always has the opportunity to hold her.
The kids in the class can hold Karen whenever they want. She lets them play with her and will even do tricks for the students. Karen is truly a blessing for her students.
