Team Trees is a collaborative fundraising challenge set in place by YouTubers Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, and Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer. Team Trees aims to plant 20 million trees in 2020. All donations to Team Trees go to the Arbor Day Foundation, an organization that plants one tree for every dollar they receive. Many notable online personalities, entertainers, and entrepreneurs have already donated to the cause.

The idea of planting trees arose last May when fans on YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit jokingly suggested that MrBeast should plant 20 million trees to celebrate hitting 20 million subscribers. However, the Team Trees initiative truly began in late October, when MrBeast uploaded a video to his YouTube channel entitled “Planting 20000000 Trees, My Biggest Project Ever!” In the video, Donaldson, his friends, and a group of volunteers planted hundreds of trees in a large field. At the end of the video, he announced the Team Trees fundraiser and challenged his audience to help raise money. After the release of the video, the initiative has rapidly gained popularity on social media due to the participation of many other YouTubers, including Rhett and Link, Pewdiepie, the Try Guys, and more.

Top donors include Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX (one million), and Tobi Lutke, CEO of Shopify (one million and one). Musk even changed his Twitter handle to “Treelon” after donating.

Team Trees has raised over 15 million dollars at the time of writing this article. At this rate, there is a strong possibility that the organization will reach its goal of 20 million dollars by the end of the year.
