If you’ve ever watched the band show at half time during a football game, you’ve probably noticed a group of girls on the field dancing, spinning flags, and otherwise adding an amazing visual element to the band show. This is The Color Guard (also commonly called Guard for short).

The Guard performs choreographed dance, flag, rifle, and sabre routines to the music of the band. The Guard also uses costumes and elaborate makeup to add to the visual interpretation.

Greenbrier East’s color guard practices an average of six hours a week, along with many extra practices thrown in here and there. Their hard work has paid off this year, too, placing them in the top three at many of their competitions, including scoring a 98 out of 100 at the latest.

The Guard will be hosting several clinicals (guard-speak for classes) throughout the winter. Important skills include multitasking, an understanding of music, and hand-eye coordination. Everyone is welcome to attend these clinicals, regardless of experience, just as long as you’re willing to learn.
