Have you or a member of your family ever moved to get better opportunities? Well, a lot of people do, and for different reasons. What are some of the reasons people move? To get a better education, a better job, better living conditions, or even to be safe from violence in their home countries. But why do they decide to move to the United States?
The United States is the third most visited country in the world and has a lot of opportunities for immigrants. I talked to Jacob Leo Schmikale, a sophomore, who said, “I moved here to study and learn more English because my sister studied here in the United States and said it was the best experience of her life. I want to learn English because I want to become an English teacher.” Schmikale moved to the U.S. from Germany 8 months ago. “It’s been good so far, but I did have some challenges like learning how to speak English and having to go places, because here you need a car to go places, while in Germany there are many ways to go places.”
“I came here to study and work and to help my family financially back in Honduras,” said junior Iris Antunez. “I came for a better life because in Honduras there is not a lot of work per se.”
Everyone’s situation is different, but this country is known for welcoming immigrants and offering them help; the United States is a place where people have a chance to improve their circumstances, but it’s not easy to leave home. Would you leave everything behind for an opportunity?
