Have you ever thought about what you are going to do after high school? Maybe not, but it is good for you to start thinking about it and reviewing your options.
Here at East, the teachers and counselors are great resources. They are here to help you, so you should never be afraid to ask them for information about options you might be interested in.
A part-time job may also be a way to explore new interests. Business teacher Kristy Caraway worked while she was in high school. “I have always worked since I was 16,” she said, “and during college, I had part-time jobs such as tutor, waitress, RA, and desk assistant.”
After high school everyone takes their path, which might be going right into work, going to college, or going to a different type of school. Find the path right for you and what you want to go for. Every person’s situation is different and if you plan on going to college you have to think about how you’re going to pay for it. A good way would be to apply for scholarships. Our counselors know what scholarships are available and can help you find the right fit for your abilities and interests.
But not all students want to go to a four-year college, so what other options are there? Well, you can always go to a community school for two years and get an associate degree. Community colleges and trade schools are also good for people who want to earn a degree or certification in the electrical, mechanical, or plumbing fields. These careers get a person right into work without much theoretical education but pay especially well for advanced credentials.
East offers JROTC for students interested in joining the military. Taking these classes can help young people learn how life in the military would be, and also allow them to enter at a higher rank if they do well in the classes.
There is a lot to choose from after high school, so start thinking and networking!
