Do you know Kimberly King? King is an amazing English teacher here at Greenbrier East who has been teaching for 25 years.
King grew up “groovy” during the 1970s wearing bell-bottom jeans and Converse tennis shoes, listening to rock and roll on VW Bug radios, and watching “Jaws,” “The Godfather,” and “Saturday Night Live.” She also grew up in a dog-loving family and currently has two ancient mini dachshunds and three cats. She is divorced with no children, and in her free time she loves to read. She is not into traveling because she says she can’t read in a car.
King has been working since she was 16 years old. She described her first job as a “dream job” where “I got paid to socialize English Setter puppies at Ryman Gum Dog Kennels.” Later, when King was in graduate school at Radford University, one of her professors asked if she wanted to earn some money as a teaching assistant, which is how she “accidentally” fell into teaching. Her favorite thing about teaching is sharing her love of words and books.
King’s favorite school events are the football games. “They’re so much fun with all the people, the band, and popcorn,” she said (though she doesn’t really know what’s going on on the field).
King started teaching at the middle school level; she says it was fun, but she’s come to prefer high schoolers because they understand her sense of humor better. While she doesn’t have any favorite books, she does have favorite genres: mystery and horror.
She vows to continue teaching because she really enjoys making students read long books and write papers.
