Have you ever heard of Galentine’s Day? It’s a special day to celebrate your closest female friends and family. This holiday is practiced mostly by women and it is celebrated on the day before Valentine’s Day. On February 13, many girls enjoy going out and having fun just to celebrate each other. The best part of this holiday is that it doesn’t require a significant other, like Valentine’s Day. Girls don’t have to sit and sulk about lacking a partner, but instead, go out and have fun with their girlfriends or the other special women in their lives. Although Galentine’s day is not an official holiday, it still attracts many participants.
“Where did this random ‘holiday’ come from?” you may be wondering. The answer is actually pretty interesting. According to The Pioneer Woman, the idea for Galentine’s Day came from a 2010 episode of the popular show “Parks and Recreation.” According to Patch, in Season 2, Episode 16, Leslie Knope, a character played by Amy Poehler, says: “What is Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it…ladies celebrating ladies.”
East girls love the idea of Galentine’s Day. Junior Cera Lim said, “I think it’s a really cute way to celebrate Valentine’s with the friends you love and cherish the most.”
“I think Galentine’s Day is an empowering holiday for women,” senior Clara Mills said. “I see Galentine’s Day as a positive alternative for girls who may feel bad for not having a relationship to celebrate on Valentine’s Day; like me, unfortunately.”
Rozalynn Humphreys and her friend Chloe Lawhorn came up with a very positive response: “Galentine’s Day is a fun way to spend the holiday without making it all about being in a relationship. It’s more about spending time with the people you love, especially your besties.”
“I think Galentine’s Day is a fun day where women can celebrate and appreciate their friendship,” Jiya Patel, a junior, said. “It gives people an opportunity to cherish supportive friendships.”
Galentine’s Day is a hit for the girls. It is an awesome way to celebrate your closest friendships and have fun with your girlfriends!
